When I read articles like this that have quotes like "...people have been generally unaware of what happens to animals on farms," I think they are kind of missing the point. I think people consciously or unconsciously choose not to think about how their food comes to end up on their plate. It's easier not to think about it and enjoy your hamburger.

I'd be vegetarian even if the meat industry was humanely run, but as it is now I don't know how anyone can condone the way these animals are treated. And yet, anyone eating non-free-range meat is implicitly condoning it.

You're exactly right - it's easier not to think about it. And if one does think about it, it's easier to imagine happy animals grazing on a farm than it is to contemplate the industrial factory farms that are the reality for the majority of the meat industry.

And for most people, it's easier to think about how good that hamburger tastes than to even consider how it got on your plate. It makes me sad.

Have you read The Omnivore's Dilemma?
